DILG’s ‘Kalinisan’ program collects over 37,000 tons of waste as of April 15

MANILA, Philippines — A total of 34.4 million kilograms or over 37,000 tons of waste materials/products were collected in nearly 21,000 barangays nationwide from January to April 15 this year under the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) “Kalinisan sa Bagong Pilipinas Clean-up Drive.”

Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos said that the weekly clean-up drive is aimed at ensuring “cleaner and greener communities.”

Abalos said 580,224 participants from 20,974 barangays  took part in the Kalinisan initiative as of April 15.

“On Saturday morning, Kalinisan returned to Barangay Holy Spirit, Quezon City, where a total of 930 Kalinisan advocates from the barangay and various sectors participated in the activity,” Abalos said in a statement.

“They conducted urban gardening in the newly-built Halina’t Magtanim ng Prutas at Gulay Community Garden, in addition to their existing Gulayan at Bulaklakan Research and Training Center,” he added.

Abalos said the program was initially showcased in Barangay Holy Spirit last February 24.
