Another mail-order bride victim rescued

A suspected victim of a mail-order bride scam has been rescued by the Bureau of Immigration from a said on Friday from syndicate that sends Filipino women to China disguised as spouses of Chinese nationals.

Citing a report from the immigration protection and border enforcement section, Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco in a statement said the female passenger was intercepted at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on March 15 before she could board a flight to Guangzhou, China.

The victim reportedly showed a marriage certificate as proof of their civil wedding, which allegedly took place at the Pasig City hall in January.

The victim later admitted that the marriage was fake and that it was arranged by a fixer who is in the business of recruiting Filipino women willing to become brides to Chinese nationals. —JANE BAUTISTA
