Magnitude 4.9 Surigao del Sur earthquake

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Marihatag, Surigao del Sur on Sunday, according to state seismologists.

The temblor was initially recorded as magnitude 5.3 but was later downgraded to magnitude 4.9.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported in an earthquake advisory that the tremor occurred at 2:22 p.m., approximately 62 kilometers (km) east of Marihatag.

The tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 27 kilometers, Phivolcs added.

State seismologists reported that the following intensities which were recorded following the earthquake:

Intensity IV – Hinatuan, and Marihatag, Surigao Del Sur

Intensity III – City of Bislig, and City of Tandag, Surigao Del Sur

Intensity II – Cagwait, and Tagbina, Surigao Del Sur

Instrumental Intensity II – City of Cabadbaran, Agusan Del Norte; City of Tandag, Surigao Del Sur

Instrumental Intensity I – Libona, City of Malaybalay, and San Fernando, Bukidnon; City of Cagayan De Oro; Nabunturan, Davao De Oro; City of Surigao, Surigao Del Norte

No damage or aftershocks are expected following the earthquake, Phiviolcs said.
