Moderate 5.5 quake rumbles off Chile’s coast —USGS

WASHINGTON—A moderate 5.5-magnitude earthquake rumbled off Chile’s coast early Wednesday, according to the US Geological Survey, which did not issue a tsunami warning.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, but the country has been on edge since a devastating 8.8-magnitude quake last year that unleashed a tsunami and killed more than 500 people.

Wednesday’s earthquake took place 59 miles (94 kilometers) southwest of the port city of Valparaiso and 85 miles (136 kilometers) west of the capital Santiago, according to the USGS.
