Comelec on cha-cha plebiscite and 2025 midterm polls

MANILA, Philippines — The number of new voters for the 2025 midterm elections has breached the one million mark, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Thursday.

In its latest registration update, Comelec data shows that 1,027,572 new voters have registered for next year’s elections, less than a month after the poll body officially opened the voter registration period on February 12.

This figure is one third of Comelec’s initial target of three million new voters for the 2025 elections.

The Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) region logged the most number of new registrants at 187,372, followed by Metro Manila with 56,990 as of March 6.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said that this is a result of “bringing the service to the people.”

Comelec recently launched its “register anywhere” project where the electoral body goes to malls and other establishments to “provide support and convenience to the Filipino community.”

“Serve them with utmost dedication. Innovate. Have the longest patience to explain,” Garcia told INQUIRER.net.

Garcia previously said that their target of three million may have been a conservative estimate.

Garcia said that the Comelec is now looking at around 3.6 to 3.7 new voters at the end of the registration period on September 30.

This new estimate does not include overseas voters, he clarified.

According to the Comelec, there are currently some 68 million registered voters in the Philippines.
