BFP to open hotline for fire-wary homeowners

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) plans to install a hotline that Metro Manila homeowners can call to request a voluntary inspection of their house electrical wiring to avoid fires.
BFP Director Louie Puracan said that bureau personnel were now undergoing training on responding to calls.
Over 3,200 fires have so far been recorded nationwide this year, about 26 percent higher compared to the same period in 2023, with 74 casualties. Of the total number of fires, 600 occurred in the National Capital Region.
Puracan urged the public to observe fire safety “especially since March is the peak of the hot season, which is exacerbated by the ongoing El Niño phenomenon.”

Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos said he hoped the public would support the initiative of the BFP, which was under his department.
Abalos asked residents to have not only their house electrical wiring checked but also their old appliances as well since overheating was the cause of most fires.
“Most fires are caused by electric fans. Why? When fans overheat, they can catch fire,” he said, as he added that other causes were electrical ignition and lighted cigarette butts.
