Mary Jane Veloso in emotional reunion with family at women’s correctional

MANILA, Philippines —The sons of Mary Jane Veloso could not contain their happiness as they reunited with their mother at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City on Wednesday morning.

Veloso returned to the country Wednesday morning after more than 14 years on death row in Indonesia.

Shortly after entering the detention facility at about 8:00 a.m., Veloso’s sons, Mark Daniel and Mark Darren, turned emotional as they tearfully hugged their mother.

Her sister and other relatives also visited her and presented her with flowers. The last to arrive at the detention facility were her parents.

The convoy transporting Veloso arrived at the CIW at around 7:06 a.m.

The commercial flight carrying Veloso arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City at around 5:40 a.m., according to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

Veloso will be mandatorily housed at the Reception and Diagnostic Center of the CIW for a five-day quarantine and 55-day orientation, diagnostic evaluation, and initial security classification, the BuCor earlier said.

Veloso’s return to the country follows an agreement between Jakarta and Manila, which was announced by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R.  Marcos Jr. and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) last November 19.

Veloso was sentenced to death in October 2010 after she was caught carrying  2.6 kilograms of heroin at Yogyakarta airport in Indonesia on April 25 of the same year.
