MANILA, Philippines — Former first lady Imelda Marcos has been admitted to a hospital for pneumonia but is “in good spirits,” according to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“I just spoke with my mother’s doctors. She is suffering from slight pneumonia and is running a fever,” Marcos said in a statement released on Tuesday night from Melbourne, where he was attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations-Australia Special Summit. He is expected to return on Wednesday.

The 94-year-old former first lady has been given antibiotics, and “the doctors are confident that this will relieve her fever,” the President added.

“She is in good spirits, has no difficulty in breathing, and is resting well. I thank the Filipino public for their concern and prayers,” he said.

Sen. Imee Marcos also confirmed the news, saying her mother was taken to a hospital for “close monitoring.”

“She has been having fever and cough, on and off,” Imee said in a text message to reporters, adding, “Given her age, we have to take maximum precautions.”
