/ 12:49 PM April 01, 2011

ORMOC CITY, Philippines – A 53-year-old man from Sogod town in Cebu has been detained at a police station here on charges of using fake checks to pay for purchases.

Victor Merencillo was arrested on Thursday after one of his alleged victims, Marvin Pantino, saw him in Ormoc and went to the police to complain that the suspect had issued him a check for P16,300 in January as payment for four car tires. The check bounced.

The police accosted Merencillo and found in his possession five checks under fictitious names with corresponding identification cards. One of his aliases was Clarence Mondejar.

During investigation, Merencillo told the police that the checks were bogus and that he bought them at Recto in Manila.
