Marcos signs law establishing college of medicine at La Union university

A Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel died in La Union on Tuesday after being swept away in the coursing water of the river during a search and rescue operation amid inclement weather.

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has enacted Republic Act (RA) No. 11978, which establishes a college of medicine at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-South La Union Campus in Agoo town.

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said in a statement on Saturday that Marcos signed the law on Friday, February 15. RA No. 11978 will become effective 15 days after its publication in the Official Gazette or a newspaper of general circulation.

Through RA No. 11978, which is titled Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-South La Union Campus-College of Medicine, a Doctor of Medicine Program, including an Integrated Liberal Arts and Medicine Program, will be offered at the university.

“The program will consist of basic science and clinical courses, and using a learner-centered, competency-based, and community-oriented approach, with the goal ‘to develop a corps of professional physicians to strengthen the healthcare system of the country’,” PCO explained.

It said that the Doctor of Medicine Program aims to respond to the human resource development needs of La Union province and the Ilocos Region.

It added that the course is mandated to undertake research and extension services as well as provide progressive leadership in La Union and Ilocos.
