PH to experience overcast skies with light rains as ‘amihan’ intensifies

MANILA, Philippines — Most parts of the country will experience overcast skies with chances of light rains on Monday as the effects of the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, intensify, state meteorologists said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s (Pagasa) 4 a.m. advisory said the northeast monsoon affects Northern and Central Luzon.

Weather specialist Obet Badrina noted that in the coming days, the weather system will affect not just Luzon but also some areas in Visayas.

“Patuloy ang epekto ng northeast monsoon o hanging amihan at inaasahan natin lalo na sa mga susunod na araw ay…lalakas pa itong hanging amihan na maaaring makakaapekto hindi lamang sa Luzon at maaari ring umabot hanggang sa kabisayaan,” Badrina explained.

(The effects of the northeast monsoon or amihan continue, and we expect that, especially in the coming days, this amihan will strengthen, potentially affecting Luzon and extending to Visayas.)

Due to the northeast monsoon, Pagasa forecasts cloudy skies with light rains to prevail over Apayao, Batanes, and Cagayan, including the Babuyan Islands.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), and the rest of Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative Region will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains, the state weather bureau said.

Visayas and Mindanao, on the other hand, will experience isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms.

Badrina advised residents in these areas to take caution as severe thunderstorms may result in flash floods or landslides.

State meteorologists said they are not monitoring any low-pressure area forming within the Philippine area of responsibility.

As for the country’s seaboards, a gale warning is hoisted over the coastal areas of Batanes, Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur, where waves may be as high as 4.5 meters.
