MANILA, Philippines — The country may expect generally fair weather this Saturday despite the likely occurrence of isolated rains because the northeast monsoon and shear line continue to weaken, the state weather agency said.

In a public weather report, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) specialist Daniel James Villamil also said they see no low pressure area forming within and outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

“Tuluyan pa nga ang paghina ng shear line o salubungan ng mainit at malamig na hangin so mababawasan na rin ‘yung mga pag-ulan sa malaking bahagi ng ating bansa, especially dito sa bahagi ng Mindanao area,” Villamil explained.

(The shear line or the meeting of hot and cold air will continue to weaken, so the rains will be reduced in a large part of our country, especially here in the Mindanao area..)

“Kasabay ng paghina ng shear line ay ‘yung paghina rin o pag-atras ng ating northeast monsoon, o ‘yung malamig na hanging amihan,” he added.

(Along with the weakening of the shear line is the weakening or withdrawal of our northeast monsoon, or the cold north wind.)

According to Pagasa, slightly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains may occur Saturday in the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Cagayan Valley due to the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan.

But such weather condition is anticipated to have no significant impact over the affected areas, the state weather bureau noted.

In Metro Manila and the rest of the country, Pagasa said partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may be experienced on Saturday due to easterlies and localized thunderstorms.

It warned of possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms in low-lying areas.

No gale warning alert was raised in any parts of the archipelago’s seaboards for Saturday, January 20.
