Kids who speak English score lower at PISA than others — DepEd exec

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) noted that children who mostly speak English at home scored lower at the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) compared to those who do not, according to an agency official on Thursday.
The PISA is an international study of the educational performances of its member nations. In December 2023, it said that it determined that the Philippines lagged in reading, science and math.
“Ang sinasabi doon sa PISA, iyong mga batang nagsasalita mostly ng English sa bahay ay mas mababa ang performance nila sa PISA,” said DepEd Usec. Gina Gonong.
(The PSA data said that, those kids who mostly speak English at home have lower PISA performances.)

According to Gonong, the 2018 PISA showed that there was no difference between kids who spoke English at home compared to those who did not. However, the 2022 results said that English-speakers at home performed worse.

Gonong said however, that the DepEd cannot make hard conclusions as to why this happened yet.
The data will be further investigated, she said.
