Marcos wants improved teaching quality after poor PISA ranking

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants improved teaching quality in the Philippines after the country received dismal results in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA.)

The PISA found in December 2023 that the Philippines still ranked low in reading, math, and science.

“Napag-usapan ‘yung mga sa tingin ng ating Pangulo ay dapat talaga nating pagtuunan ng pansin in the coming years, or in the coming months, weeks, years. At yun at number one, teaching quality, gusto niya talaga magkaroon ng expertise ang ating teachers,” said Department of Education (DepEd) spokesperson Michael Poa in a Palace briefing on Thursday.

According to Poa, Marcos believes that teachers need to be better equipped with technology to allow them to do better.

Furthermore, the DepEd also presented the various school feeding programs to Marcos. Poa said that the government’s various student feeding programs complemented each other, but Marcos wants to see how they can be further enhanced.
