Boracay Water wins DOE’s 2023 energy efficiency award
Officials from Boracay Water accept the Special Award in Energy Efficiency Excellence at the Department of Energy’s 2023 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards.
MANILA, Philippines–Manila Water’s subsidiary, Boracay Water, has secured its second accolade for energy efficiency, winning at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) 2023 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards (EEE).
Demonstrating an outstanding commitment to responsible energy use and sustainability, Boracay Water earned the prestigious title in the Special Awards in Energy Efficiency Excellence category, specifically under the Energy Efficiency Projects Implemented and Other Best Practices subcategory.
This accolade serves as a testament to Manila Water’s unwavering dedication to sustainability practices.
The DOE EEE Award, an annual recognition program, acknowledges companies, projects, government sectors, and individuals for their exemplary best practices in energy efficiency. Notably, this achievement marks a historic milestone for Manila Water, clinching its very first award in this prestigious category.
Through its Energy Policy, Boracay Water successfully implemented several operational efficiency measures, leading to a notable improvement in the energy use index from 0.54 kWh/cu.m in 2018-2022 to 0.44 kWh/cu.m and substantial energy savings of 1.4 million kWh in three years, equivalent to a cost avoidance of USD 248,214 or Php 13.9 million.
The business unit’s average annual savings are at 467,092 kWh/yr, equivalent to a 17% reduction from the baseline energy consumption, while the average annual cost avoidance is at USD 82,679 or Php 4.63 million/yr, equivalent to 19% of the baseline energy cost.
Among Boracay Water‘s energy efficiency initiatives are the management of the Manoc-Manoc reservoir water level, adjustment of Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) frequency settings, water supply diversion for reduced energy consumption, and optimization of its pumping station operations.
Adrian Bryan Magallanes, General Manager of Boracay Water, shares his perspective on this significant recognition: “While much can still be done on energy efficiency and sustainability, this award is a validation that we are on the right track. Earlier this year, Manila Water also won an Energy Efficiency Award from the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines.
