Pagasa says TD Kabayan may hit Surigao del Sur or Davao Oriental

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Kabayan may make landfall in Surigao del Sur or Davao Oriental between late Sunday night and Monday morning, the state weather agency said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Kabayan is likely to hit either of the two provinces between 11 p.m. on Sunday and 2 a.m. on Monday.

We expect it to possibly make landfall here in Surigao del Sur or the Davao Oriental area, tonight until tomorrow morning.,” Pagasa Assistant Weather Services Chief Chris Perez said in Filipino during a press conference.

Perez advised the public to check updates on the tropical depression through Pagasa’s official channels or social media pages as the state weather service will issue weather bulletins every three hours.

As of 10 a.m. Sunday, Kabayan was located 440 kilometers east of Davao City, according to Pagasa.

The tropical depression has maintained a maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph, as it moved slowly north-northwestward east of Mindanao at 15 kph.

Based on Pagasa’s forecast track, the center of Kabayan may reach Macajalar Bay in Bohol by Monday morning and cross the coastal waters of Aborlan, Palawan, by Tuesday morning.

Pagasa also said Kabayan may exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Wednesday.

Meanwhile, as Kabayan moved closer to landmass, Pagasa raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Number 1 over the following areas:

Visayas

⁣Mindanao

Pagasa said Kabayan may cause minimal to light damage to structures made out of light materials and minimal to no damage to  concrete structures.

No sailing policy

The state weather agency also hoisted a gale alert over the seaboard of the following areas:

In a separate advisory also on Sunday, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of Surigao del Sur issued a “no sailing and no beach activities” order.

“Sea travel is risky over these waters for small sea crafts of any type or tonnage. The public is hereby advised of the no sailing and beach activities for the safety of everyone,” the advisory reads.
