MANILA, Philippines — The low pressure area (LPA) east of Surigao del Sur developed into a tropical depression and is now named Kabayan, the state weather agency said Sunday.

In a bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the Kabayan may hit Surigao del Sur or the provinces nearby by Sunday night or early Monday morning.

As of  7 a.m. on Sunday, Kabayan’s center was estimated at 460 kilometers east of Davao City.

The tropical depression was packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center with gustiness of up to 70 kph and continues to move westward over the sea east of Mindanao at 15 kph.

We expect that Kabayan may make landfall in parts of Surigao del Sur or neighboring provinces tonight or early tomorrow morning,” Pagasa weather specialist Patrick Del Mundo said in Filipino during a Sunday morning public report.

It is expected that it may cross the Mindanao or Visayas area and exit the Sulu Sea, or west of Puerto Princesa City, tomorrow or Monday,” he added.

The Pagasa weather specialist also said Kabayan may leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Monday or Tuesday.

As typhoon Kabayan crosses, it can maintain the tropical depression category, although we are not eliminating the possibility that it will develop into a tropical storm even before landfall,” del Mundo said, further noting that it is also likely that the tropical depression may go back to being an LPA as it passes through Mindanao before again strengthening into a tropical depression over Sulu Sea.

Based on the latest Pagasa bulletin, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Number 1 was hoisted over the following areas:

Visayas

Mindanao

As for the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, Pagasa said it has intensified and has been affecting the climate in northern and central Luzon.
