'Amihan' slightly strengthens, to bring light rains over parts of northern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines — The northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, has slightly strengthened and will bring cloudy skies with light rains to some parts of northern Luzon, the state weather bureau said on Thursday.

In a morning advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) also said that no significant impact is expected in the provinces where amihan prevails.

“‘Yun pong amihan ay bahagya pong lumakas at naapektuhan ang northern Luzon. Makakaranas po tayo ng maulap na kalangitan at mahihinang pag-uulan sa mga lalawigan ng Cagayan, Batanes, at Apayao,” said Pagasa weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio.

The same weather system will bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains to the Ilocos Region, the rest of the Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Cagayan Valley, he added.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country may expect generally fair weather conditions due to easterlies, with chances of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Easterlies are the warm winds blowing from the Pacific Ocean that cause humid weather.

The state weather bureau warned residents in low-lying areas of possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

Pagasa added that it is not monitoring any typhoons within or outside of the Philippine area of responsibility.
