Man killed by neighbor in Mandaue, son wounded

A MAN was killed while his son was wounded after they were shot by their neighbor in barangay Umapad, Mandaue City.

Pedro Saladaga, 48, was fatally shot in the chest.

His 21-year-old son Abello was wounded in the thigh. A neighbor, Martiniano Rosco, also sustained a gunshot wound in the back.

Rodante Pelayo, a 24-year-old scavenger, surrendered to police a day after the shooting.

Before the violence, police said Pelayo was drinking with two friends Wednesday night when Pedro overheard him telling his drinking buddies that Pedro’s other son Mark Andrew was involved in a neighborhood theft where rice sacks worth P4,000 were stolen.

Police said two men were arrested in connection to the theft.

Arrested were Doydoy Paglinawan, 18, and Reymart Baay, 18.

Police said Mark Andrew remains at large.

Pedro confronted Pelayo to defend his son.

A heated argument ensued, said Insp. Ramil Morpos, deputy chief of the Investigation and Detective Management Branch of the Mandaue City Police Office.

Armed with an improvised shotgun locally known as pugakhang, Pelayo returned moments later and shot Pedro.

A splinter hit Abello and Rosco.

After the shooting, Pelayo fled and went to the house of his uncle, PO3 Teofilo Calungin, who convinced him to surrender early morning yesterday.

Pelayo told police that he acted in self-defense when he shot Pedto.

He alleged that his neighbor was the first to point a .38-caliber revolver at him.

The gun used in the shooting was not recovered.

Pelayo said he already threw the shotgun away.

Pelayo was detained at the Opao police station pending the filing of charges against him., said police./CORRESPONDENTs NORMAN V. MENDOZA AND FE MARIE D. DUMABOC
