MANILA, Philippines — Bangsamoro parliament members on Wednesday lauded the program of Bangsamoro Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim to develop solar-powered lighting and water systems in poverty-stricken areas in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARRM).

Bangsamoro Member of Parliament (MP) Amir Mawalil said this program may start when the BARMM pioneers clean energy in the country.

“Solar power is an infinite source of energy, and the Bangsamoro region has been blessed with ample spaces and the appropriate weather for solar power to thrive. I support this initiative and may this be the start of an era where BARMM is a champion of clean energy in the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, MP Rasol Mitmug Jr. also said that if the program is successful, they will push its implementation for the rest of the region.

“Solar energy nowadays has low maintenance requirements. So communities can enjoy electricity without paying high energy costs. If this program is successful, we will push for its implementation for the rest of BARMM,” Mitmug said.

In 2022, Mawalil and Mitmug authored a bill that proposed the introduction of solar energy in socialized housing programs in the BARMM.

On November 13, 150 houses in Barangay Tuka in Sultan Mastura, Barangay Raguisi in Sultan Kudarat and Barangay Maputi in Parang were fitted with solar-powered lighting and water systems under the Kapayapaan sa Pamayanan program of Ebrahim.
