4.7-magnitude quake hits off Maitum, Sarangani – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck off Maitum, Sarangani, Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said the tectonic quake happened at 8:10 a.m. and had a 26-kilometer depth of focus.

State volcanologists said General Santos felt the temblor at Intensity III, while their scales logged the following Instrumental Intensities:

• Instrumental Intensity V in Kiamba, Sarangani
• Instrumental Intensity IV in General Santos City
• Instrumental Intensity III in Pikit in Cotabato, Malungon and Maasim in Sarangani, and Tupi and Polomok in South Cotabato
• Instrumental Intensity II in Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental, Alabel, Glan, and Malapatan in Sarangani, and Koronadal City in South Cotabato
• Instrumental Intensity I in Tantangan, South Cotabato

In a previous interview with INQUIRER.net, Phivolcs Science Research Analyst Lara Guianan explained that intensity is based on the ground motion felt by people in the affected area, while instrumental intensity is the quake’s strength measured by an intensity meter or scale.

Phivolcs said this earthquake is not expected to cause damage or aftershocks.
