4.7-magnitude quake hits off Maitum, Sarangani – Phivolcs

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake hits waters off Sarangani province

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck off Maitum, Sarangani, Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said the tectonic quake happened at 8:10 a.m. and had a 26-kilometer depth of focus.

State volcanologists said General Santos felt the temblor at Intensity III, while their scales logged the following Instrumental Intensities:

In a previous interview with INQUIRER.net, Phivolcs Science Research Analyst Lara Guianan explained that intensity is based on the ground motion felt by people in the affected area, while instrumental intensity is the quake’s strength measured by an intensity meter or scale.

Phivolcs said this earthquake is not expected to cause damage or aftershocks.
