Opening of LRT-1 Cavite Extension by end of next year on track, says LRTA

MANILA, Philippines — The construction of Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension Phase 1 is progressing as scheduled.

The target opening is in the fourth quarter of 2024, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) said in a statement on Friday.

LRTA said that by the third quarter of 2023, the Cavite extension project will be 94 percent complete.

According to LRTA, Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) intends to start its operation in the last quarter of 2024.

LRMC is a private operator of LRT-1.

“We are optimistic that in less than a year, we are to begin the commercial operations of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 Project,” LRMC President and CEO Juan Alfonso said.

“The overall progress rate is a good signal to usher the country into an era of modern railway experience where passengers can take advantage of world-class amenities, user-friendly and PWD-friendly facilities, high standards of safety and security, and value-added services,” he added.

Alfonso is referring to the civil and system works of the 6.7-kilometer extension, composed of five new stations in various development stages.

The following are the completion rates of LRT-1 Cavite Extension (Phase 1):

  • Redemptorist Station (next station after Baclaran station, southbound) – 86 %
  • MIA Station (closest station to the airport) – 86 %
  • Asia World Station (to be connected to Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange) – 72 %
  • Ninoy Aquino Station – 81 %
  • Dr. Santos Station (last station for the Phase 1 extension) – 90 %
  • The construction of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension started in 2019.

Once completed, it will add eight more stations to the current 20 stations of LRT-1.

The project covers major cities such as Quezon City, Caloocan, Manila, Pasay, and Parañaque, traversing Bacoor, Cavite.
