BFAR: Closed fishing season for galunggong in Palawan starts
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said that closed fishing season for round scad, locally called galunggong, has started in Northern Palawan.
Based on the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1988, closed fishing season refers to the period wherein catching certain fish species using specified gear is prohibited in some areas.
According to BFAR, fishing for galunggong using purse seine, ring net, and bag net within its conservation area northeast of Palawan has not been allowed since November 1.
BFAR noted that the season will last until January 31, 2024.
The prohibition in fishing is to protect the galunggong during its peak spawning season, the BFAR noted in their announcement on Friday.
