MMDA eyeing to double fine for jaywalking on Edsa, C5 road

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is looking to double the penalty for jaywalking on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (Edsa) and Circumferential Road 5 (C-5), its chairman Romando Artes said on Friday.

“For now, the [penalty] is at P500. We are looking to [increase it to] P1,000,” Artes said in a press briefing shortly after MMC’s meeting.

“Then we will include seminars on the penalty so it would be planted in their minds, more than the monetary penalty,” he added.

The move to increase the fine for jaywalking was briefly tackled during the Metro Manila Council meeting on Friday after Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. floated the idea.

Artes said this move was not yet adopted during the meeting since there needs to be more consultation for the measure.
