MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will give cash assistance to the family of the Grade 5 student in Antipolo City who suffered a fatal brain injury after a teacher allegedly slapped him and pulled his hair.

DSWD spokesperson Rommel Lopez on Tuesday said the family of the 14-year-old student will receive a “minimum” of P10,000 financial assistance for medical bills and funeral assistance.

“We will closely coordinate with the authorities and concerned agencies to ensure the welfare of the bereaved family,” Lopez said in a statement.

On September 20, the unidentified teacher allegedly pulled the male student’s collar and hair and then slapped him, according to the victim’s mother.

Following this, the student complained of dizziness, headache, and vomiting, which prompted them to rush him to the hospital on September 26.

The student fell into a coma and eventually died on October 2, with the doctor also finding internal bleeding in the brain.
