SAN SALVADOR – Salvadoran economic minister Hector Dada has resigned, President Mauricio Funes said Friday, promising to soon name a replacement.

“Doctor Dada, in effect, submitted a letter to me in which he informs me he has decided to resign irrevocably and presenting personal reasons for doing so,” Funes told an impromptu press conference. “I’ve accepted it from him and from this day, he ceases to be the minister of the economy.”

Funes, saying he regretted Dada’s resignation, added that he has already identified who would replace him.

He declined to name his pick, saying he would withhold it until the new economic minister is sworn into office.

Funes, who assumed the presidency in 2009 with support from the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, will mark his third year in office on June 1.
