MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) has filed cases against the incorporators of MGC Warehouse, Inc., the owners of the residential unit in Tandang Sora that caught fire on August 31.
Fifteen people died in the fire that happened in the early morning.
After a police investigation, cases of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides were filed against Catherine Sy, Lina Cavilte, Johanna Cavilte, and Geoffrey Cavilte, a release from the Quezon City government on Saturday said.
Quezon City mayor Ma. Josefina “Joy’ Belmonte said that the city hoped that this investigation would bring justice to the victims of the fire.
“We hope that through this development, justice will be served to the 15 individuals who perished during that unfortunate incident. We appreciate the effort of the Quezon City Police District for being committed to ferret out the truth,” Belmonte said.
Earlier, Belmonte tasked the Bureau of Fire Protection to conduct an inspection, as a probe started by the city government and the city council revealed “ lax inspection, backlog in the examination of businesses, and other lapses in the performance of the Bureau of Fire Protection-Quezon City Fire District.”
The City Legal Department was also ordered to create a Special Panel of Investigators to further probe the incident and to file cases against the surviving officers of the business establishment, as well as liable local government officials, who may face administrative and criminal charges.
