CCSC football field ready by August

The football field of the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) may host matches of the United Football League (UFL) in the third week of June if the contractor taking care of the rehabilitation of the pitch will give its go signal.

In an interview before the unveiling of CCSC’s newly rehabilitated rubberized oval track last Sunday, CCSC manager Ricky Ballesteros said the football field will be opened to the public in August.

“The contractor said it will take three to six months for the grass to fully grow on the field. So it is safe to say that this August, that football field will be ready,” Ballesteros said.

Ballesteros said that he received a call from engineer Ricky Dakay of the Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC) regarding the hosting of the UFL matches this June.

He said he favors the idea if only one match will be played since it will only take 90 minutes. He also wants to get the nod of the contractor Keneto Construction and the supervising city engineer first.

As much as he wants it to be used sooner, Ballesteros said that just like the oval, they do not want to hurry things and risk a bad job.

The weaning of the football field, which cost P2 million, was started last November with the first half first being worked on, Ballesteros said.

Work consisted of filling up the field with new soil, planting the carabao gras, flattening the field, and allowing the new grass to grow for a compact and even finish.

Work was done in halves because they had to make way for the setting up of a stage for last January’s Sinulog festivities.

Grass was planted on the remaining half just this month. By next week, they plan to flatten it in preparation for the rains in May, which would help the new grass grow.
