THE UNIVERSITY of the Visayas’ sports program continues to enjoy a banner year as the school brass celebrated their triumph in the men’s category of the 15th Nestea Beach national finals held last weekend in Boracay.
The UV squad of Mike Abria and Jade Becaldo triumphed in straight sets over fellow Cebuanos, University of San Jose-Recoletos’ Jade Illut and Jason Uy to annex the coveted beach volleyball championship.
UV became the first team in the event’s long history to have a championship in each the women’s and men’s classes. Head coach Raffy Briones also steered the belles of UV, namely Jusabelle Brillo and Janez Ygot, to the crown in 2007.
“UV is not just the school of champions now. It is also the school of national champions,” said UV assistant vice president for finance and administration Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas in a press conference yesterday.
Earlier in the year, UV added another feather to its cap as its Passerelle team bucked all the odds to win the title in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Under-16 National Championships in Baguio City./Correspondent Jonas Panerio
