JAKARTA—A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck near the coast of Indonesia’s Papua province on Sunday, geologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or tsunami warnings issued.

The quake struck at a depth of 36 kilometers (20 miles), 161 kilometers from Enarotali, at 9:16 p.m. (1216 GMT), the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

There was no warning or advisory posted on the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center website.

The quake was followed 10 minutes later by an aftershock that the USGS measured at 5.4.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and is frequently hit by earthquakes.
