MANILA, Philippines — Retired Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno on Wednesday encouraged Filipinos to switch to renewable energy, particularly solar power, to save money and become “energy independent.”

Puno chairs an all-Filipino corporation, GenWATT Energy Solutions, which specializes in designing and installing solar energy systems in households and small and medium enterprises.

While launching a 25-kilowatt grid-tied solar energy system at a pharmaceutical building in Quezon City, the official said that transitioning to solar energy can ensure the continuity of businesses as it can save them a significant amount of money from utility bills.

“It will enable them to lower their energy and cost, ensure the business continuity, and most importantly, achieve energy security,” he said.

Meanwhile, GenWATT chief operations officer Conrado Generoso highlighted that choosing solar energy will give the public the “power” to produce their own electricity.

“We can free ourselves from them [private power providers] using the technology that is now available,” he said.

This will not only be beneficial for them but for future generations as well since solar panels can last up to 25 to 30 years, he added.

Generoso, likewise, cited the impending end of the Malampaya gas field’s ability to produce electricity four years from now.

“Mauubos na po ‘yung Malampaya gas natin. By 2027 it is zero, zero production,” he said.
