MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake jolted Dalupiri Island in Cagayan province early morning Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The tectonic quake, which shook the island at 1:30 a.m., was initially reported to have a size of magnitude 5.3, but the state seismologist later downgraded it. It occurred at a depth of four kilometers.
Phivolcs said Intensity II was felt in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte while Intensity I was recorded in Aparri, Cagayan.
No report of damage or casualty from the earthquake has been received by Phivolcs so far, but science research specialist Julius Galdano said a temblor of this magnitude is not expected to bring destruction.
“Wala pa po kaming natatanggap na balita about damages pero for the magnitude, we don’t expect na this quake is damaging,” Galdano said in a phone interview with INQUIRER.net.
(We have not yet received any news about damage, but given the magnitude, we don’t expect significant damage from the quake.)
