MANILA, Philippines — Health reform advocate Dr. Anthony “Tony” Leachon resigned from his post as Department of Health (DOH) Special Adviser for Non-Communicable Diseases effective immediately.

In a letter addressed to DOH Secretary Teodoro Herbosa dated September 11, Leachon mentioned that he is quitting “after careful consideration” and “based on personal reasons.”

“I have made this decision after careful consideration, and it is based on personal reasons that I believe are best for me, my family, and my future,” wrote Leachon, an internist and a cardiologist.

“This decision has not been made lightly, and it comes after much thought and consideration. I appreciate your kind understanding and support. I wish the DOH team continued success in the future,” he added.

Last month, Herbosa named Leachon as DOH Special Adviser for Non-Communicable Diseases, noting that he could greatly help the agency’s reforms and initiatives.

On September 8, Leachon’s position was downgraded to “voluntary” status after a lawmaker criticized his new role in the health agency.

Herbosa said Leachon was willing to work as a volunteer consultant and assist the government with his expertise.

Leachon was a special adviser to the National Task Force against COVID-19 in 2020, during the term of President Rodrigo Duterte.

But he resigned, citing differences with DOH policies and its alleged lack of urgency and management at the height of the pandemic.
