Shellfish from areas in Visayas, Mindanao affected by red tide

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) cautioned the public from eating shellfish caught in parts of Visayas and Mindanao in a Facebook advisory on Saturday.

According to the BFAR, shellfish from the following areas were found to be positive for paralytic shellfish poison:

Aklan

Capiz

Iloilo

Bohol

Zambaonga del Sur

“All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the areas shown above are not safe for human consumption,” the advisory said.

On the other hand, other foods such as fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe as long as they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and their internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.
