LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has extended the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) in Ilocos Norte province until Sunday, Sept. 3, due to the inclement weather.
In an advisory on Thursday, the Comelec said the extension was due to the suspension of government work in the province on Wednesday.
Aside from Ilocos Norte, COC filing is also extended in Abra province and the National Capital Region until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, Comelec Ilocos regional director Noli Pipo also said the COC filing could still be extended depending on the declaration of work suspension in the coming days.
Campaigning banned
The regional Comelec also issued a warning on Wednesday to candidates that election campaigning remained prohibited until Oct. 18.
Pipo said those who have filed their COCs are allowed to take photos and post them with declarations that they had filed their COCs. He, however, emphasized that they should refrain from adding words that could be construed as campaigning.
“Unlike in the national elections, [a person who has filed a COC] for the BSKE is already considered a candidate, and they are prohibited to campaign, directly or indirectly, until the start of the campaign period in October,” said Pipo. INQ
