Orange rainfall warning up over Metro Manila, other areas due to southwest monsoon

MANILA, Philippines — An orange rainfall warning was raised over Metro Manila and other areas of the country on Thursday due to a boosted southwest monsoon.
In separate advisories, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the orange rainfall warning was hoisted over Metro Manila, Bataan, Zambales, and Oriental Mindoro where heavy rain of up to 100 to 200 millimeters (mm), flooding, and landslide may occur.
Authorities also raised a yellow rainfall warning in the Ilocos Region, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, and Calamian islands where 50 to 100 mm of rainfall may persist.

The enhanced southwest monsoon, locally termed habagat, will also bring windy conditions to the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Aurora, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas and the northern portion of Eastern Visayas, according to the state weather bureau.
The southwest monsoon is being boosted by Super Typhoon Goring (international name: Saola), although it already exited the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) at 7:50 p.m. on Wednesday, and the new Severe Tropical Storm Hanna (international name: Haikui), which entered the PAR at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Pagasa added.

Based on the latest Pagasa bulletin, Hanna is located 1,225 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon, packing wind speeds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of 115 kph. The severe tropical storm was moving west-northwestward at 20 kph and may exit the PAR on Friday afternoon or evening.
