MANILA, Philippines — Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on Monday dedicated the celebration of National Heroes Day to the heroes who fought for the country’s independence and democracy, also hailing different kinds of workers, from government personnel and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to farmers and fisherfolk.

“Today, we remember the bravery, courage, and patriotism of our heroes who fought for our independence, liberty, democracy, sovereignty, our country, our people. To them, we owe our freedom,” Romualdez said in a statement.

He also noted the sacrifices of OFWs, whom he called “modern-day heroes,” for their commitment to providing for their loved ones and contributing to the country’s economy.

The speaker also saluted women who tend families and households, calling them the “greatest heroes.”

“We salute every Filipino who does his share in building our nation. Most of all, we honor our women who tend to our families and households. They are our greatest heroes,” he said.

Furthermore, Romualdez also lauded laborers for driving economic growth and farmers and fisherfolk for providing the country’s food.

“We salute our employers, our entrepreneurs — big, small, medium, micro – who serve as drivers of economic growth,” Romualdez said.

“We acknowledge as well the arduous daily toil of our farmers and fisherfolk in support of their loved ones and country’s food requirements. They, too, are our heroes,” he added.
