Migrant workers’ NGO mourns death of DMW chief Ople
MANILA, Philippines — A non-government organization (NGO) for overseas Filipino workers is mourning he death of Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople.
In a Facebook post, Migrante-International said that Ople’s work in the Filipino migrant sector was ‘long and respectable.’
“Secretary Toots has a long and respectable record of NGO work and advocacy for migrant workers and all migrant Filipinos,” the post said.
It added that while it had criticisms of Ople, she did not close lines of communication with the NGO, and maintained a spirit of dialogue in addressing concerns with migrant workers, as well as their families in the Philippines.
“Recognizing that it is productive for the government to listen to grassroots organizations, families, and advocates of migrants, she engaged in dialogue on concrete measures to alleviate the plight of OFWs and migrant Filipinos,” it added.
Ople was the second secretary of the newly-created DMW, which was established in February 2022.
