Surigao Del Sur hit by 4.8 magnitude quake

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake rocked areas near Cagwait, Surigao Del Sur at 2:34 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

There were no reports of damage or injury from the quake that centered 26 kilometers northeast of Cagwait.

The quake’s origin was tectonic and had a shallow depth focus of 10 kilometers.

Instrumental measurements reported an intensity level of II in the City of Tandag, Surigao Del Sur.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
