Gov’t launches campaign to combat fake news

MANILA, Philippines — Seeking to combat disinformation and misinformation in the country’s digital landscape, the Marcos administration,  through the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), will implement a Media and Information Literacy (MIL) campaign.

The PCO, in a statement on Saturday, said the initiative will begin with a ceremonial signing of Memorandum of Understanding among its partners on Monday, August 14 at Hilton Manila in Pasay City.

The Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, Department of the Interior and Local Government and Department of Social Welfare and Development will be part of the initiative.

“These agencies will collaborate with the PCO on a comprehensive execution plan crafted to target the identified root causes of the issue. The MIL will be integrated into the higher education curriculum, community-based training, and family-oriented programs,” the PCO said.

Social media giants Google, Meta, TikTok, and X are also expected to collaborate with these government agencies.

“The MIL is the administration’s response to the disinformation and misinformation plaguing the country’s digital landscape, focusing on capacitating the youth to become more discerning consumers of media,” it added.
