Fonacier carries Texters to victory

LARRY FONACIER made eight three-point shots, including a pivotal one in the dying seconds of the game, to lead the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters to an 89-85 win over the Powerade Tigers yesterday in the PBA Governor’s Cup out-of-town game at the Davao del Sur Cultural, Sports and Business Center in Digos, Davao del Sur.

Fonacier finished with a game-high 27 points as the Grand Slam-seeking Texters improved to 3-0 (win-loss) to remain on top the team standings.

After Powerade import Chris Porter tied the ballgame at 85-all with 37.6 seonds left in the fourth, Talk ‘N Text called timeout to set up a play for the red-hot Fonacier.

The timeout worked well for the Texters of coach Chot Reyes as Fonacier managed to launch a three-pointer from the side, which went in for a crucial 88-85 lead with 18.2 second left.

The Tigers, which fell to 1-3,  still had a chance to tie but Gary David’s potential game-tying three-pointer missed with 12 seconds to go.

Jason Castro of Talk ‘N Text got fouled on the rebound play and made one of his two freethrows for the final tally.

Castro and Ali Peek added 14 each for the Texters. Porter led the losing squad with 18 while David had 10.

Meanwhile, the Alaska Aces shoot for a second straight win when they face the winless Air21 Express in the first game today. The Derby Ace Llamados and the Meralco Bolts face off in the seocnd game at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Aces started the tournament with two straight losses but ended the slide with a 107-102 win over the Llamados.

Bot the Llamados and the Aces have 1-2 records.
