Pagasa: Southwest monsoon’s rains on PH to ease if typhoon off PAR dissipates

Pagasa: Southwest monsoon's effects on PH to wane if typhoon off PAR dissipates

MANILA, Philippines — Rain and thunderstorms spawned by the southwest monsoon would weaken in parts of the country, especially in Luzon, if the typhoon outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) dissipates.

State weather specialist Benison Estareja explained that the forecast from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) showed overcast skies, rain, and thunderstorms would hit parts of the country on Friday, August 4.

“Dahil humihina na si Bagyong Khanun, inaasahan din ang paghina ng habagat o ang epekto nito sa ating bansa,” Estareja said.

(Since Typhoon Khanun is weakening, the weakening of the southwest monsoon or its effect on our country is also expected.)

Khanun locally named Typhoon Falcon lingered within PAR early this week and almost became stationary outside PAR. It was last located 715 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.

According to Pagasa, gloomy weather remains very likely to prevail over Luzon while generally fair weather with isolated rain showers is seen for the Visayas and Mindanao.

The state weather bureau also said that Pampanga, Zambales, and Bataan are expected to have occasional rains this Friday while the Cordillera Administrative Region, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Occidental Mindoro, the rest of the Ilocos Region, and Central Luzon will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.

Metro Manila will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms, it added.

Estareja noted that the typhoon is still enhancing the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, even if it’s already far away from PAR.
