Senate restores pre-pandemic hearing setup as health emergency ends

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate will revert to its pre-pandemic hearing and meeting practices beginning Monday, August 7, following the recent lifting of the state of public health emergency nationwide due to COVID-19.

“[T]he Senate will no longer conduct hybrid hearings and meetings beginning Monday, August 7. We shall revert back to the pre-pandemic practice of conducting meetings and hearings personally,” said Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri during a plenary session on Wednesday.

“This is in line also with the House of Representatives, because the House of Representatives, they [have] now canceled the hybrid sessions and hybrid hearings. In line with that, we will also continue that practice,” he added.

The decision, according to the lawmaker, is also in view of Presidential Proclamation 297, which lifts the state of public health emergency throughout the Philippines due to COVID-19.

Zubiri further mentioned that almost all activities in the chamber have now returned to pre-pandemic levels.”
