MANILA, Philippines — In celebration of White Cane Safety Day, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Tuesday announced that it will offer free rides to visually impaired passengers in the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) from August 1 to 6.

Apart from the visually impaired commuter, DOTr said one companion may also enjoy the free ride offer during the whole duration of the program.

One must only present their valid persons with disability or PWD identification card to security personnel to avail of the free commute.

“Nakiki-isa po ang MRT-3 sa pagdiriwang ng buong bansa ng World Cane Safety Day. Patuloy nating bibigyang prayoridad ang kapakanan at mga karapatan ng ating visually impaired passengers lalo na sa sapat, mabilis, komportable, at maaasahang transportasyon,” said DOTr Assistant Secretary for Railways MRT-3 Officer-in-Charge Jorjette Aquino.

(MRT-3 is joining in the nationwide celebration of World Cane Safety Day. We will continue to prioritize the welfare and rights of our visually impaired passengers, especially in adequate, fast, comfortable, and reliable transportation.)

Under Republic Act 6759, White Cane Safety Day is celebrated annually every August 1 to raise public awareness of the plight of the blind.
