MANILA, Philippines — Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) on Friday suspended the safety certificate of the motorized banca that capsized in Binangonan, Rizal on Thursday (July 27).
“The decision to suspend the safety certificate is in response to the unfortunate sea incident, which raises concerns about the integrity of the ship’s hull, integral parts, and other affected machinery/appliances,” Marina said in a statement.
According to the agency, the suspension will be lifted after its inspectors complete a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of the boat.
“The safety and well-being of passengers and crew remain the utmost priority, and any reinstatement of the certificate will be based on favorable recommendations, ensuring the vessel’s compliance with all safety standards and regulations,” it said.
Marina will also conduct a marine safety investigation once the search and rescue operations are completed.
The tragedy left 26 people dead, based on the report of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
PCG also said Princess Aya overturned 50 yards (0.04572 kilometers) off Barangay Kalinawan at around 1 p.m. on Thursday.
