Pagasa: Egay now a super typhoon

Egay (international name Doksuri) developed into the super typhoon category on Tuesday morning, with four areas now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3, state meteorologists said.

UPDATED MANILA, Philippines — Egay (international name Doksuri) developed into the super typhoon category on Tuesday morning, with four areas now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3, state meteorologists said.

The super typhoon is located 310 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 230 kph, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its latest update.

Pagasa said Egay will reach its peak intensity on Tuesday before it eventually weakens.

“Egay is nearing its peak intensity. A short window of a [highly] favorable environment in the near term will allow it to either maintain its intensity in the next 12 hours or slightly intensify,” Pagasa said.

“Afterwards, a weakening trend may begin due to increasing interaction with the rugged terrain of Northern Luzon and Taiwan,” it also said, adding that further weakening is expected outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

Egay will exit PAR on Thursday morning, said Pagasa.
