Egay now a typhoon: Signal No. 2 up in northeastern Catanduanes

MANILA, Philippines — Severe tropical storm Egay (international name: Doksuri) has developed into a typhoon as it moves west-northwestward over the Philippine Sea, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
In its 11 p.m. Sunday bulletin, Pagasa said Egay was last spotted 490 km east-northeast of Daet, Camarines Norte, moving 10 kph and carrying sustained winds of 120 kph and gustiness of up to 150 kph.
Pagasa raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 in the northeastern portion of Catanduanes — specifically in Pandan, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, and Gigmoto.
Signal No. 1 was raised in the following areas:
- Catanduanes
- eastern Camarines Sur: Garchitorena, Caramoan, and Presentacion
- northern Aurora: Casiguran and Dilasag
- the eastern Isabela: Dinapigue, Divilacan, Maconacon, Palanan, Ilagan City, San Mariano, Tumauini, San Pablo, and Cabagan
- eastern Cagayan: Santa Ana, Gonzaga, Lal-Lo, Gattaran, Baggao, and Peñablanca
- the northern part of Eastern Samar: San Policarpo, Oras, Arteche, and Jipapad
- the eastern part of Northern Samar: Lapinig, Gamay, Mapanas, Palapag, Laoang, Catubig, and Pambujan
Pagasa kept a gale warning raised in the following areas:
- the northern coast of Camarines Sur
- the northern and eastern coasts of Catanduanes
- the eastern coast of Albay
- the eastern coast of Sorsogon
- the northern and east coasts of Northern Samar
- Eastern Samar
- the eastern coast of Surigao del Norte, including Siargao and Bucas Grande islands
- Dinagat Islands
Egay is forecast to intensify further and reach the super typhoon category by Wednesday while passing over the Balintang Channel.
“Considering these developments, the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property. Persons living in areas identified as highly or very susceptible to these hazards are advised to follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials,” Pagasa said.
