MMDA, DOLE ink agreement on temporary workers for public schools’ upkeep

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday signed an agreement providing temporary employment and support to displaced workers in Metro Manila.

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday signed an agreement providing temporary employment and support to displaced workers in Metro Manila.

The MMDA, in a statement, said that under the MMDA-DOLE Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (Tupad) program, the beneficiaries will engage in a range of tasks aimed at improving public schools.

These tasks include cleaning, planting of ornamental plants, cleaning and clearing of canals and esteros, deepening of open waterways, desilting of drainage mains, declogging of drainage laterals, fabrication and installation of manhole covers, installation of steel gratings, classroom repairs and maintenance work.

The MMDA under the said agreement will be responsible for providing a list of beneficiaries, relevant job descriptions, a consolidated budget proposal, and other necessary information as required by DOLE.

 “This is a milestone convergence for DOLE and MMDA especially that we are now preparing for the opening of classes and bracing for the rainy season. This project will not only benefit the TUPAD workers and their families but the public as well,” said DOLE Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma.

“We hope to implement TUPAD with broader impact and lasting benefit so as to maximize the efficient spending of government resources,” he added.

TUPAD is a community-based program, providing immediate relief to those facing economic hardships, including displaced, underemployed, and seasonal workers.
