MMDA: P1,000 fine, not P500 for riders sheltering under footbridges, flyovers

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday clarified that instead of P500, motorcycle riders sheltering under footbridges and flyovers will be fined P1,000 under the single ticketing system.

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday clarified that instead of P500, motorcycle riders sheltering under footbridges and flyovers will be fined P1,000 under the single ticketing system.

The MMDA previously announced that it would begin penalizing such drivers due to obstruction of traffic for P500.

the MMDA Public Information Office, however, clarified that under the new Metro Manila Traffic Code and the single ticketing system, the fine for obstruction is P1,000, not P500.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority acting chairman Romando Artes explained that the move was based on the fact that taking shelter under overpasses is dangerous not just for motorcycle riders but for other motorists as well.

On Thursday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority also urged motorcycle ride-hailing firms to sanction drivers violating traffic rules.

The MMDA also announced that talks are underway with gasoline station owners for the setting up of tents to protect riders from the sun and rain.
