MANILA, Philippines — House of Representatives Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has called on various government agencies, including the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), to work together and enhance the country’s fire safety systems.
Speaking at the turnover rites or five Leyte-bound firetrucks at the BFP’s headquarters in Quezon City on Monday, Romualdez said that collaboration is important since the presence of fire trucks and skilled firefighters provide Filipinos peace of mind.
Reassuring presence
“Their presence within our communities provides reassurance and peace of mind, knowing that in times of distress, there are brave souls ready to respond with unwavering determination,” Romualdez said.
“Let us work hand in hand to strengthen our emergency response systems, promote fire safety education, and enhance collaboration between local government units and the Bureau of Fire Protection,” he added.
“Together, we can build safer, more resilient communities. By investing in our firefighters and the resources they require, we invest in the future of our nation.”
According to Romualdez, the occasion also serves as a reminder for people to remember the government’s commitment to every community’s safety, along with the importance of every fire truck and every firefighter.
“Let us remember that the flame of hope is kept alive by the bravery and selflessness of our firefighters and first responders […] This occasion serves as a testament to our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our communities, as well as a celebration of the invaluable role our firefighters play as pillars of nation-building,” he said.
“(Fire trucks are) not mere vehicles (because they) represent our collective dedication to equipping our local governments and their respective firefighters with the necessary resources to carry out their crucial duties […] firefighters are more than individuals in uniforms. They serve as beacons of hope, guardians of life, and protectors of property,” he added.
BFP has been quizzed several times as to its purchase of firetrucks, with some lawmakers questioning its prioritization of government items. Last October, lawmakers of the 19th Congress asked BFP to buy more fire trucks instead of guns.
BFP’s commitment, service
“To the BFP, I extend my deepest gratitude for your unwavering commitment and service. You are the embodiment of heroism and compassion, and your sacrifices do not go unnoticed,” he said.
“Their unwavering dedication and courage serve as an inspiration to all, reminding us that through unity and a shared sense of purpose, we can overcome any challenge,” he added.
